Evaluation

There were three different actions taken by our group members to overcome the problem of landslide. Those actions were:

- Promote awareness in terms of insurance coverage relating to landslide
- Creating blog for discussing landslide
- The plantation of trees

Fadhil's action: Insurance awareness.

This was one of the possible solutions mentioned in the short-term visions in terms of economical and also social aspects. This was chosen as part of the solutions to reduce the severity of damages caused by landslide. It could also be a triggering point for house owners to do some preventive measures if they know that their insurance company does not cover damages caused by landslide.

The change resulted from this particular action was the knowledge gained from the house-owners regarding the fact that most house insurance companies does not cover damages caused by landslide. With this knowledge, they could change their current house insurance companies to those insurance companies which does not cover damages caused by landslide if the house-owners thinks that their house it prone to landslide.

This action was more or less as expected when on the visions. There were no real unpredictabilities or unexpected occurences during the implementation of the actions. The planning of actions done before the actual actiosn were done contributed to this incomplexity.

The main concern for the actual plan to be implemented was the time constraint. The thought of doing interviews with representatives of the housing insurance companies and house owners just seemed to be time consuming. Asking the suitable questions to the housing insurance companies and house owners were also one of the barriers faced. Another barrier was also picking the actions to be implemented as part of our solutions. This became a barrier because of the impression that not able to actually do the actions as it is not manageable and do-able.

However, to overcome the barriers mentioned, professional guidance from our lecturer of this specific course, Dr Irene Cheong. Teamwork of fellow coursemates also helped to overcome the barriers. Hardwork was also key to overcome the barriers.

Other possible solutions that could have been taken were promoting leaflets and brochures to promote awareness regarding landslide. Having said that this does not guarantees effectiveness in achieving its goal as people tend to throw away the brochure once they have read about it. Another issue regarding the handing out of brochures is the money needed to make copies of the brochures and the design or layout needed to attract readers.

From the action done as part of the solutions to landslide, we gained invaluable knowledge regarding landslide. For instance, the fact that most house insurance does not cover damages caused by landslide caught the group attention. From this course, making a contribution to the society. This is needed to ensure that future generations could learn a thing or two from our respective project. In addition, we learned that doing actual plan is harder than just plain-talking and suggesting of the possible actions to be implemented as part of the solutions. In conclusion, hopefully, this project could help house-owners albeit their house is not prone to landslide.

Jauzi's action: Creating a blog

The next action on the project is creating a blog. The blog is to find out the respondents opinion in order to be added to the project's problems and solutions that related to the topic landslides.

The change resulted from this particular action was to share information in the post about the landslide and need the respondents to respond and discuss this matter about landslides. With this discussion, extra information can be added to the projects.

Compared with other visions in the project, this action is more reliable and readable especially, with today's technology, people tend to use internet more often than reading other media such as newspaper. With this, the people can read the blog and add some information about landslide. Not only that, the respondents can give their opinions on the same time.

There are two barriers from doing this action. One of them is advertising the blog into the public. The action that is executed earlier is by advertising to the well-known blogs, facebook and via MSN. However, the advertising not really satisfying as the blog only exposed for awhile, where the advertisement being stopped in a few days. Therefore, this needs to be improve in the near future. The next barrier is the respondents. Some of the respondents in the blog are friends but some of them are random peole. However, it is not satisfying as most of the visitors in the blog were silent readers, rather than giving their opinions. From my point of view, the respondents seems to not reading the blog as it is for academics, however, if the blog is more gossipy, probably the respondents will response more.

However, the solution of the barriers from doing this action is that with the help of some of the friends in giving comments or their opinions in the blog is much appreciated. It is a big help though, but in need from the public voice more valuable. The other solution from doing the action is advertising. The advetising still in progress, especially it is posted in my personal blog. However, the number of the visitors are slowly increasing.

From this course, we managed to experience the real life especially in terms of interviewing, making surveys and others. In addition, the most important thing for taking this course is teamwork. Without teamwork, the workloads can not be done in time, and this course really need determination, leadership in a group. Moreover, the course itself needs to be done practically than theoretically as in applying what we have learned in the textbook in the real world.

Basyar's action: Plantations of trees

The plantation of trees as planned in our action plan were executed with the involvement of the authority handling the university's estate. This involvement of the authorities was an informal interview regarding matters of handling the university estate. It was through the informal interview that we introduce our plan of planting the trees in the university prone areas of landslides. After informing them about the plantation of trees, we was rebuked to the fact that the university has no jurisdification over the areas of destruction that we have included in our action plan. The area of the aftermath of the landslide that has occured in the university compound has originated from the ongoing construction of the new Institute of Medicine.

The root of the problem became clear that the company which was in charge of the construction site was bounded with a contract between the university enabling them to have full control of the situation. The university has no jurisdiction over the development as they have given the company consent over the site that they are currently working on. Since the root of the landslide was around the area of the construction, we were told by the university that our plan of planting the trees cannot be done because of the contract made between the company and the university. Knowing this fact, the idea about the plantation of trees was abruptly stopped.

The failure of the plantation of trees, however, was given light as the authorities of the university estate told us about the development of the construction site. The contract made between the company and the university have also include the sustainable development of the construction site. We were told that the damages and loss that the university have encountered during the duration of the construction will be covered by the company. With this in mind, our plan of planting the trees has failed without the co-operation of the university and the company. However, the failure of this plan could be avoided if we were given more time to execute this plan.
